Chris Wiese with Bolson Tortoise.jpg

The largest and rarest of the six North American tortoise species, the Bolson Tortoise is thought to have once lived throughout most of the Chihuahuan desert, but its current range is restricted to a small area in north central Mexico. In an effort to bolster the population of this critically endangered species, Sevilleta NWR has been selected by the US Fish & Wildlife Service to receive a group of these animals starting in 2024, with the goal of establishing a self-sustaining population on the SNWR. How do you do this? What problems must you solve? How do you know if you are successful?  Learn the answers to these questions from Dr. Chris Wiese, Senior Biologist with the Turner Endangered Species Fund, and leader of the highly successful Bolson Tortoise Project on the Armendaris and Ladder Ranches near Truth or Consequences. Dr. Wiese is one of the leading authorities on the Bolson Tortoise, having worked with them for the past 16 years.

This talk will take place at the annual meeting of Amigos de la Sevilleta. Members and non-members are invited. Refreshments provided.

Enjoy food, conversation, and a talk by Dr. Olivia Carril on the bees of New Mexico.

New Mexico is a hotspot of biodiversity for native solitary bees, with an estimated 1000 species in the state, representing about 1/4th of all the bees found in North America.  Unlike the honeybee, these bees do not make honey, do not live in hives, and there are no queens and worker bees.  Dr. Carril will discuss their role in pollinating the majority of New Mexico's flowering plants, and reveal how they are essential to ecosystem health.  She will also share results of her field research on some of the more interesting solitary bees that occur in the Sevilleta.

Dr. Olivia Carril is a coauthor of The Bees in Your Backyard:  A Field Guide to North America's Bees.  She is currently working on surveys of the bees of Rio Grande del Norte National Monument and Bandelier National Monument.

The Amigos Board will also briefly report on matters pertinent to the operation of the group, including membership, finances, and accomplishments.

Learn about moths from noted researcher Eric Metzler, join him on a hunt for caterpillars near the Visitor Center—and then hang out and see what comes to the light! Eric Metzler is the 2014 recipient of the National Park Service’s Intermountain Regional Director’s Award for his longterm moth studies as a volunteer at White Sands National Monument. Metzler found 1,000 species of moths at White Sands, almost 4% of which live no place else on earth. In 2015, Metzler received world-wide media attention when he sold naming rights on eBay for one of the White Sands’ moths he discovered. Money from the winning bid was used to support further moth research. Reservations aren’t required unless you are interested in staying overnight at the UNM Field Station. The inexpensive lodging is in casitas designed for researchers—a private bedroom, but the bathroom may be shared. Contact Program Manager Stephanie Baker to check on availability: srbaker@sevilleta.unm.edu or call (317)514-1978.
